After three convictions in three years, the man was arrested again for assaulting his wife. He was released pending a trial that never took place.
The 51-year-old is now sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, announces Nyköpings district court.
It was in January that the heavily intoxicated 51-year-old called the police and reported that he believed he had killed his wife. When they arrived at the residence in Vagnhärad in Trosa municipality, they found the woman stabbed to death on the bedroom floor.
In the verdict, the district court states that the woman's death must have been preceded by severe psychological suffering and "obvious death anxiety", which justifies the life sentence.
The man, who is convicted of murder and assault, has admitted to causing the fatal knife wound to the woman's neck but denies the crime.
Convicted of assault
The man was convicted of assaulting his wife as early as 2018, two weeks after their wedding. The sentence was a conditional sentence and fines.
The following year, he received two years' imprisonment, and the third time, in 2020, it was four months' imprisonment.
Time and again, the wife described the severe assault in interrogations, but remained silent and withdrew her statements when it came to the trial.
In September 2023, the 51-year-old was arrested again, but released pending a new assault trial that never took place.
"Not the same mum"
During the trial, the woman's sons described how their mother increasingly withdrew after meeting the man.
She stopped answering when you called. When she did answer, you could always hear him in the background asking who she was talking to. It was not the same mum anymore, it was someone else in control, said the eldest son in court.
He was supported by his younger brother:
I was always extremely worried, both for myself and my mum and my brothers. I felt that sooner or later he would do something physical to one of us, said the younger brother.
