"Our thoughts go to the family, Team Mendelspeck, her teammates and everyone who today feels pain over yet another life lost on the roads", writes the Italian competitive cyclists' organization, ACCPI, in a statement.

According to the initial information, the 19-year-old died after being hit by a car coming from the opposite direction and on the same lane during an overtaking maneuver.

Her brother was with her during the training, but is said to have escaped with minor physical injuries.

Cycling has been affected by a number of accidents in the training environment on the roads in recent years.

In August 2023, the 22-year-old Belgian cyclist Tijl De Decker died after being hit during training, and in November 2022, the Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin was killed after colliding with a truck.
