I have ordered IDF (Israel's army) to take control of the buffer zone and military outposts nearby. We will not allow enemy forces to take control of outposts along our border, said Netanyahu.
Israel refers to the fact that Syrian forces have "left their outposts" and that the agreement on a demilitarized zone is therefore no longer valid.
The Prime Minister's statement came during a visit to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
In the buffer zone
IDF announced on Sunday that forces were already present in the buffer zone since Saturday.
A large part of the Golan Heights was occupied by Israel in connection with the war in 1967 and the buffer zone was created under UN mandate in 1974.
The zone between Israel and Syria lies on Syrian territory in the country's southwestern corner, east of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It is separated by the so-called Alpha line along the Israeli border and the Bravo line on the Syrian side.
Airstrikes against weapons depots
The announcement from Israel came at the same time as reports emerged that Israel had carried out airstrikes against Syrian weapons depots near a military airbase on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.
On Sunday afternoon, Israel was also reported to have bombed a security building complex near the buildings of the ousted regime.
The information comes from the Syrian Human Rights Observatory (SOHR) in the UK.
"Since last night, we have been active in battles on four fronts", writes Israel's military on Telegram, referring to Gaza, Lebanon, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and Syria.
Israel simultaneously emphasizes that IDF will not interfere in internal Syrian affairs.
