Previously, several failed launches have been reported within the program with the carrier rocket Simorgh, and initially, the information about this launch has not been confirmed from independent sources.

According to the US, Iran's satellite launches defy a resolution from the UN Security Council.

"Iran's work on spacecraft – including its Simorgh – would likely be able to shorten the timeline for producing an intercontinental ballistic missile, if they decided to develop one, since the systems use similar technology", it states in a report from the American intelligence service released last summer.

The launch is said to have been made from the Imam Khomeini facility in Semnan province, which is the location of the country's civilian space program.

The Simorgh rocket is said to have carried what Iran calls an "orbital drive system", and also two research systems to an orbit around the Earth.
