Only 40 percent of the surface water in the EU is in good condition, warns former EU Minister Jessika Roswall in her first major report as environmental commissioner in the EU.
Our water is polluted, our water supply is threatened and we are not doing enough to prevent flooding, says Roswall when presenting the report on the water situation in the 27 EU countries.
For too long, we have seen water as an infinite resource. We must change that, says Roswall and warns, for example, that 74 percent of Spain's area is at risk of desertification.
The report is to pave the way for a strategy for water resilience in the EU, which Roswall will present later this year.
