The heavyweight champion in boxing, Oleksandr Usyk, was arrested at Krakow airport. This prompted Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj to react sharply.

I was disappointed by the attitude towards our citizen and master, says Zelenskyj, after talking on the phone with the boxer.

Our master has been released, he is no longer detained.

The 37-year-old was arrested after protesting that his travel companion was not allowed to board a plane. The two refused to leave the gate and the police therefore took them away.

"It was a misunderstanding that was quickly resolved", writes Usyk on Instagram.

He also writes that the Polish police should be respected for having performed their duties and not backed down due to his size and boxing merits.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha writes on X that the actions against Usyk were disproportionate and unacceptable and that they will contact Poland about this.

Usyk beat Tyson Fury in May to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, a title he later relinquished when he paused the belt. A rematch against Fury is planned for December 21.
