36-year-old Bergman has previously been the national team captain for the women, but will now have an expanded role where he is responsible for both national teams.
"Our goal is to consolidate Sweden's position as a world nation in men's table tennis in the short term, while building a long-term plan to lift women's table tennis to the same level," says Bergman in a press release.
Daniel Ellerman, sports manager at the Swedish Table Tennis Association:
"In the reorganization we are now implementing in the national teams, Tobias has been the first choice for this modern solution where we want to work in a new way for the next four years."
In the new model, the national team captain will work with a greater focus on player development, writes the association. Several assistant leaders will be tied to the national team captain, including to relieve the load during camps and larger competitions and championships.
During the European Championship in Linz next week, Tobias Bergman will be responsible only for the women, while Jon Persson has the men's responsibility.
Bergman will formally take up his new position on November 1.
