Harvey Weinstein's lawyers are appealing against the conviction of the film mogul in court in Los Angeles, writes Sky News. The appeal is not particularly unexpected, as the highest court in New York overturned a 23-year prison sentence for sex weeks ago and the retrial in the case will be taken later this summer.
Weinstein, 72, has been serving his sentence in a New York prison since 2020. He was convicted of a range of sex crimes against women – despite his denial.
In Los Angeles, he was sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment in 2022 for further assaults and rape of a woman. According to the appeal, the jury was influenced by the earlier conviction in New York against Weinstein.
The film mogul has now retained lawyers who are experts in appeals, including Jennifer Bonjean, who helped actor Bill Cosby to be acquitted of charges of sexual assault in 2021, writes Sky News.
