The UN Secretary-General António Guterres demands an end to the situation in Gaza, which he describes as the worst death and destruction he has seen during his more than seven years in office.
At the same time, he says it is "unrealistic" to believe that the UN could play a role in the future of the border area, either by administering the area or having a peacekeeping force there, due to Israel likely not accepting a UN role.
Guterres says that the UN has offered to monitor a potential ceasefire and that "the UN will be available to support any ceasefire".
