King Gustav III's archive at Uppsala University Library will soon be digital and accessible to researchers and other curious individuals, reports SVT News Uppsala.
The announcement comes after the archive has been blocked for lending since 2019, as it had become too worn out.
In the meantime, they have taken the opportunity to repair and digitize the Gustavian collection, and in January, the digitization is expected to be completed.
Gustav III bequeathed his private papers to the library, and since the king's death in 1792, they have housed twelve shelf meters of letters, notes, manuscripts, and much more.
There are very few personal archives of this kind after kings, either in Sweden or elsewhere from this time, says Johan Sjöberg, archivist at Uppsala University Library, to SVT.
