The USA's President Joe Biden – pressured after his criticized debate performance against Donald Trump last week – may soon consider his decision to stand in the autumn's presidential election, according to a Democratic governor.
I believe the President will stay in the race as long as he doesn't feel that it's impossible to win, or if he feels that he must listen to voices in his inner circle about not standing, says Josh Green, Democrat and Governor of Hawaii.
We will probably find out how the President feels about all this within the next few days.
According to Green, it will soon become clear how great the pressure on Biden is, as Congress members return to work after the national holiday this week.
Biden has been hammering home the message that he doesn't intend to step aside and has emphasized that he has the strength to beat Donald Trump in the election.
But the pressure on Biden has continued to increase after the disastrous debate performance. Five Democratic representatives in the House of Representatives have publicly demanded that the President step aside.
American media reports claim that a group of senators are also trying to gather support to ask Biden to abandon his candidacy. Leading Democrats in the House of Representatives are expected to hold a remote meeting on Sunday to discuss the situation.
If Biden were to decide to step aside, it is likely that he would appoint Vice President Kamala Harris as the party's presidential candidate, predicts Josh Green.
