The trend in recent years is that almost everyone, regardless of whether they have to pay tax or get money back, wants to get their tax return done as soon as possible.
Already today, the first day the tax return service is open, the Swedish Tax Agency expects around 1.5 million people to log in to click the approval button.
You just want to get rid of it and think it's nice when you're done and can let go of it, says Johan Schauman, tax return expert at the Swedish Tax Agency.
No changes
Those who are due to get money back on their taxes this year can get it as early as between April 8 and 11 – thus well before Easter. For it to go so quickly, the tax return must be digitally approved by April 2 at the latest, without any changes or additions.
The last day to file your tax return is May 2, and if you do, you'll get your final tax assessment and refund in June instead, says Johan Schauman.
Most tax returns where all information is pre-filled and only digitally approved are completely correct. The errors that occur are often in the areas the Swedish Tax Agency calls self-reporting, i.e., when you have to attach and add information yourself.
Half wrong
And most common is that errors occur when it comes to travel deductions.
Last year, 900,000 Swedes made travel deductions. Through the checks we perform, we know that approximately every other case, you're not entitled to the deduction or make it too large, says Schauman.
To be eligible for travel deductions by car, the time saved must be at least two hours per day compared to traveling by public transport. The distance between your home and workplace must also be at least five kilometers. Only costs exceeding 11,000 kronor give deductions.
Tricky rules
Another common error area is those who have sold a home.
The rules are quite tricky for what's called improvement costs. You have a hard time understanding which costs you can deduct.
It can also be difficult to remember all the costs you've had for improvements and renovations if you've owned your home for a long time. But then Schauman's tip is to use your mobile phone.
You can go through your phone and look at all the material choices and renovations when you're standing with paint on your nose and a roller in your hand, says Johan Schauman.
Get an e-identification if you don't already have one.
Notify your bank account if you have money to get back.
Check your information before you approve.
File your tax return digitally by April 2 at the latest if you only need to approve and want to get your refund early.
