After the vote count has been going on for over a week, CNN and NBC can now calculate that the Republicans secure at least 218 of a total of 435 seats.
If the prognosis stands, it means that the incoming president Donald Trump's party controls both chambers of the American Congress, since the Republicans won a majority in the Senate in last week's election.
This would in turn mean that Trump gets it easier to fulfill his election promises, including large tax cuts and a tightening of migration policy, writes CNN.
The Republicans have had a majority in the House of Representatives since 2023.
The US Congress consists of the Senate with 100 members, two from each state, and the House of Representatives with 435 seats, distributed in relation to the states' population.
Congress has its seat in the Capitol in the capital Washington. Its work runs in two-year periods.
