The Mexican military has killed the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel. “El Mencho,” as the leader was called, was killed near the World Cup host city of Guadalajara.
His death sparked chaos, with cartel members burning cars and blocking roads in nearly a dozen Mexican states. The unrest is now affecting football in the country.
Two football matches in the top league - Querétaro against Juárez on the men's side and Chivas against América on the women's side - have now been postponed.
Mexico's men's national team has a friendly match against Iceland scheduled for Wednesday in Querétaro. The Mexican Football Federation has not yet taken any public action to postpone it as well.
