The United States is not formally participating in the UN climate summits after the country, under President Donald Trump, withdrew from the Paris Agreement and global climate cooperation.
Nevertheless, a 19-member congressional delegation will attend the meeting, Democratic member of Congress Sean Casten announced a day after the Democrats’ victory in the midterm elections:
“Of course, we will not yet be in the majority [in Congress], but we will be received with understanding,” Casten said, adding that the US presence serves an “important diplomatic role”.
The COP31 climate summit will take place in Antalya, Turkey, from November 9 to 20 this year.
