Jönköping Water Leak Spurs Repair Delays and New Flood Warnings

Three million liters of water flowed out onto Jönköping's streets through a two-meter long hole. The risk of new leaks means that the repair work is taking longer. With the high pressure that occurred, there may have been new damages, says VA chief Roger Rohdin.

It was likely movements in the ground that caused the large water leak on Monday, when a main pipe under Södra Strandgatan burst and flooded a large area in central Jönköping.

Since the damage is in the middle of the pipe, on the underside, one can suspect that it is bending forces and movements in the ground that have had an impact, says Roger Rohdin, VA chief at Jönköping Municipality.

But we will analyze it further when we have retrieved the broken pipe section.

During 24 minutes, nearly three million liters of water flowed through the two-meter long and half-meter wide hole before the water was shut off, reports P4 Jönköping.

The municipality has begun repairing the broken pipe, but the work will take longer than expected. This is due to the risks of new leaks.

When the pipe is repaired, the water will be very carefully turned on again.

It will be a nervous moment. There may have been more damage to nearby pipe sections due to the large leak, says Roger Rohdin.

He expects it may take a week before the road opens to traffic.

In addition, a new flood warning was issued on Tuesday morning, which P4 Jönköping has reported on. According to the VA chief, however, the leak, which occurred at the travel center, likely had nothing to do with the large leak.
