After a terrible autumn, Finland is firing the national football team's captain, Markku Kanerva, after eight years.
The board's decision is unanimous. We cannot be satisfied with the results, says the Football Association's chairman Ari Lahti to Yle.
The Finnish football team has had a very bad autumn with six straight losses in the Nations League and a 2–13 goal difference. The national team is thus relegated to the C-division. The team's form is the worst in 50 years.
Due to the losses, the mood in the team has become worse. We have talked to the players and their opinion is important. When we saw how tough it was for the players now in November, I felt as chairman that we had to change course. One felt that change was required, says Lahti.
Kanerva extended his contract as recently as this summer.
