The beached whale penis in the fishing village of Snogebæk is reported to be one and a half meters long. In pictures in Danish media, the dried-up genital organ lies side by side with a measuring tape in the green grass.
The find is likely to originate from a sperm whale that was washed up on the island's southern tip in July, reports TV 2 Bornholm, which broke the news.
This is very unusual and means that the whale we found on Dueodde last summer was definitely a male. Otherwise, it would mean that several whales have died in the Baltic Sea, which is unlikely, says nature guide Kenneth Nielsen at the experience center NaturBornholm to the channel.
The penis, which according to Nielsen smelled "pretty awful", is now in a freezer pending further examination.
The sperm whale is a baleen whale that can grow up to 19 meters long and weigh over 35 tons. It is unusual for giant whales to swim into the Baltic Sea, but according to the news agency Ritzau, specimens have been sighted in Danish waters both this year and last year.
