Tove Jansson's classic novel "The Summer Book" has been made into a film – with the American actress Glenn Close in one of the roles.
I think it's such a beautiful portrayal of human beings' place in nature and their connection to it, says director Charlie McDowell at the film's premiere in London on Saturday.
"The Summer Book" is about little Sophia and her grandmother getting to know each other during a summer together on an archipelago island in the Gulf of Finland. At the same time, Sophia has just lost her mother, while her grandmother, played by Close, is approaching death.
The character Sophia is loosely based on Tove Jansson's niece of the same name.
The book is fantastic and beautiful because of the book, not because some parts of it are based on a real person, says the real Sophia Jansson at the premiere at the London Film Festival.
However, it's not the first time "The Summer Book" has been dramatized. Two years ago, a play based on the book was staged at the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm.
