There are over 300 works of art at Chalmers that belong to the state's art collection and are on loan from the State Art Council, according to the newspaper.
The absence of several paintings was discovered during the university's annual inventory and three police reports were filed at the beginning of the year.
It involves paintings, drawings, photo art, and graphic sheets that have disappeared from rooms and corridors. Among the paintings that have disappeared are works by artists such as Jim Berggren, Petter Zennström, and Lena Cronquist.
The extent of the art theft is unclear.
We do not currently know if they have been stolen or if they have been relocated for some reason, says Henrik Dahlberg, press chief at Chalmers, to GP.
He admits that the university has not had sufficient control over the current works of art and says that there are "deficient administrative routines here that we need to look at".
Henrik Orrje, acting director of the State Art Council, tells GP that it is regrettable that the works of art – which are uninsured – have disappeared.
This is, after all, state property from the people's collections. The art was purchased with tax money and ultimately belongs to the people.
