Two friends of the perpetrator are sentenced to 16 years in prison for complicity in the murder. Two others are sentenced to 13 and 15 years in prison, respectively.

Paty, who taught history and geography in the suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, had his head cut off by a radicalized 18-year-old after showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, previously published by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, during a lesson on freedom of speech.

The perpetrator, an 18-year-old with Chechen background, was later shot dead by the police.
