Eight days that shook Lebanon

A week of escalation in the conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Islamist Hezbollah in Lebanon has no comparison in the two warring parties' prolonged history of violence.

Monday, September 16

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announces that Israel's war goals are being expanded northwards: "The security council has updated the war goals this evening to include the following section: A safe return for residents in the north to their homes". At the same time, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warns an American envoy of an imminent military operation in Lebanon.

Tuesday, September 17

In the afternoon, hundreds of explosive devices start ringing, and then explode, all over Lebanon and Syria. Over 2,000 people are injured and at least 12 people are killed, including two children. Many of those affected were members of Hezbollah. A few grams of inserted explosives are believed to have caused the explosions.

Wednesday, September 18

A new coordinated attack on communication equipment – walkie-talkies – used by Hezbollah members. At least 20 people are killed when the devices explode, including at a funeral.

Thursday, September 19

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah delivers a speech from a secret location. He states that the Iran-backed movement has "endured a serious and brutal blow". While Nasrallah delivers his speech, Israeli fighter jets fly low over Beirut. Israel carries out several airstrikes against Hezbollah's launch ramps.

Friday, September 20

An Israeli airstrike hits a residential building in al-Dahiya in Beirut. The high-rise building is leveled to the ground, at least 45 people are killed, including several children, according to Lebanon's health department. Commander Ibrahim Aqil of Hezbollah's military branch Radwan is killed.

Saturday, September 21

Extensive Israeli airstrikes against targets in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military says that 400 Hezbollah targets were hit. Hezbollah fires rockets at northern Israel, and air raid sirens sound in over 70 Israeli cities. Most of the rockets are shot down.

Sunday, September 22

Hezbollah fires over 100 rockets and drones at Israel and hits targets five miles into Israel. It is the first time since the terrorist-designated Hamas attack on Israel from Gaza on October 7, 2023, that Hezbollah rockets have reached targets so far into the country.
