The court based in the Netherlands states in a statement that "the chamber considers it suitable for Mr. Duterte's first appearance" to take place on Friday afternoon.
The message came a day after Duterte flew from the Philippines to the Netherlands.
On site in The Hague, the former president acknowledged his "responsibility" to defend the country's police and military.
Duterte is suspected of crimes against humanity for the violent operations he ordered in what he called "a war on drugs". Duterte says he bears responsibility for the policy and for the country's police and military – but he denies the crimes.
At the same time, reports emerge that Duterte resisted when he was arrested in the Philippines; he refused to give fingerprints and exclaimed that "you must kill me to get me to The Hague".
