The talks with the USA give hope that problems can be solved, for example the "Ukraine conflict", according to Vladimir Putin.

The first contacts with the new USA government give some hope. There is a mutual desire to work to restore relations, says Putin at a meeting with the security service FSB.

Diplomats from Russia and the USA have initiated talks in Turkey on Thursday. They will discuss "diplomatic problems", according to Russian news agencies.

The talks are being held at the USA's general consulate's residence in Istanbul due to the countries' attempts to re-establish ties.

The USA has initiated talks with Russia after President Donald Trump previously promised to quickly reach some form of peace solution in the full-scale invasion war that Russia launched three years ago.

The USA and the previous President Joe Biden's government fully supported Ukraine's will to defend itself – and chose to try to isolate Moscow politically and economically.

The complete turnaround in the White House with President Trump means that new contacts are being made between Washington and Moscow.

Restoring the damaged relationship with the USA is a process, says Kremlin's spokesperson Dmitrij Peskov and adds that neither side expects quick or easy decisions.

But with the two countries' political will, with the willingness to listen and hear each other, we will be able to get through this work process.
