Since Denmark likes to trade with the Saudis, football should not be a battleground, believes Denmark's former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

She believes that the Danish Football Association (DBU) should vote yes to let Saudi Arabia host the World Championship 2034.

This is stated by the former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, currently chairman of DBU's board and development committee, in an interview with Politiken.

Saudi Arabia is the only candidate for the World Championship 2034 and is also expected to be elected. This despite the fact that the candidate process, the International Football Association (Fifa) and Saudi Arabia have been criticized from many quarters regarding how the candidate process has been conducted and the conditions in Saudi Arabia regarding human rights.

Thorning-Schmidt believes that when "all Danish companies happily" do business with the Saudis, and both Denmark, the EU and the USA have diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, football should not be a battleground.

Football is fundamentally a cultural event. If you want to wage a battle with Saudi Arabia over human rights, why not have it about our general trade policy or political-diplomatic cooperation, says Thorning-Schmidt.
