A dam in southeastern Ukraine has been hit in a Russian bombing raid and is leaking large quantities of water.
Now the local governor is warning that several villages in Donetsk and Dnipro are threatened by the rising water masses.
The dam outside Kurachove, east of the metropolis Dnipro, is located near the front line in the war and was hit in a Russian attack on Monday.
Just hours later, the water level in the Votja River had risen by over a meter, says Ukrainian Governor Vadym Filasjkin according to AFP.
Last year, Russia attacked the Kachovka dam in Ukrainian Cherson, which led to floods that cost many human lives. Enormous water quantities were released when the dam – which had been under Russian control since the beginning of the war in 2022 – suddenly collapsed.
