In late July, the parliament voted yes to approve the controversial pesticide acetamiprid. A law that the Constitutional Council has now invalidated as it contravenes France's environmental charter, which constitutionally guarantees the "right to live in a balanced and healthy environment".
President Emmanuel Macron has "noted" the decision and will implement the law as soon as possible in a form that takes into account the decision, his office announced.
The substance, which has been banned in the country since 2018, not only kills pests but is also believed to kill bees and other pollinating insects. French farmers have demanded the reintroduction of the agent, but the new law sparked a public outcry in the country.
In connection with the parliament's vote on the so-called "Duplomb law" (named after Senator Laurent Duplomb), more than two million French people signed a petition against the law.
