Azerbaijan and Armenia in the Caucasus have long been in military conflict over, among other things, the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabach, which Azerbaijani forces captured in a military offensive in September 2023.
The potential agreement could potentially pave the way for the reopening of important transport routes across South Caucasus that have been closed since the beginning of the 1990s.
Two anonymous American government sources tell AP that the agreement will give the US the right to develop a corridor through Armenian territory that connects Azerbaijan to the Nakhichevan region. The corridor will be named after Trump and is expected to eventually include oil and gas pipelines as well as railways for the transport of both people and goods, according to the sources.
The peace agreement is also said to pave the way for Turkey and Azerbaijan to reopen their borders with Armenia, which have been closed for nearly four decades.
