In the segment, drag artists danced around a table and the French actor Philippe Katerine lay across the table, completely painted in blue, portraying the Greek winged god Dionysos.

The segment was seen by some as an interpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci's classic work "The Last Supper", which depicts Jesus' last meal. On social media, it was mainly criticized by conservative Christians, who believed the interpretation was mocking and blasphemous towards Christianity.

However, according to the ceremony's artistic director Thomas Jolly, the segment had nothing to do with Da Vinci's famous painting, something that several media outlets have noted, including SVT's Cultural News.

It should be obvious. It's Dionysos who arrives at this table. He's there because he's the god of celebration according to Greek mythology, he says to French BFMTV and continues:

The idea was to depict a pagan celebration with the gods of Olympus.
