More than 94,000 trains departed in January, beating the previous record from January 2023, which was just under 90,000 departures, according to preliminary figures from the Swedish Transport Administration.
81,859 of 94,387 passenger trains arrived on time, resulting in a punctuality rate of 86.7%. Compared to January 2024, punctuality increased by four percentage points. The definition of punctuality is that the train reaches the final station within five minutes of the timetable.
Short-distance trains had a punctuality rate of 91.8%, medium-distance trains 83.1%, and long-distance trains 70%.
During the month, the number of disruptions due to unauthorized persons on the tracks increased. Over 2,000 passenger trains were affected, and more than 1,300 of them were delayed by more than five minutes.
Other events also had a significant impact on punctuality. In the first days of the year, ice formed on the contact wires of the Western Main Line due to no trains running there during the New Year's night.
South of Stockholm, cracks in the tracks were also discovered, which needed to be repaired at night. What mainly affected punctuality was the speed reduction that the Swedish Transport Administration decided on for safety reasons.
