Civil explosives, which include homemade thermos bombs, have decreased since the authorities have worked intensively to stop the flow.
They have done a good job, and we have received a positive response from the industry. A likely consequence is that criminals have started using hand grenades and pyrotechnics instead.
"Extremely sensitive"
Early analyses show that most hand grenades come from former Yugoslavia, which means they can be over 30 years old and of poor quality.
Those that are thrown do not need to detonate. Then it is extremely important that the public does not believe they are harmless. On the contrary, they can be extremely sensitive. Therefore, it is important not to touch them, keep a distance from the object, and contact the police.
It is not uncommon for young people to be responsible for both transportation and detonation, which entails an additional risk, according to Christianssén.
A hand grenade is manufactured for war situations. Without experience, it can mean a direct danger to life for the public. Now we also have a flow of very old hand grenades.
Hand grenades from Ukraine
It is still too early to say where the other hand grenades come from. According to Christianssén, the police expect hand grenades from the war in Ukraine to start appearing.
This is something we are prepared for. But it is not something we can see today. Right now, we are working very actively to map out where they come from and how they have entered Sweden.
