Like in many other cities in Europe and the world, rental electric bicycles are controversial in the Spanish coastal metropolis. A month ago, stricter rules came into force, and traffic police now have extra focus on electric scooters.

The result for February was 2,943 issued fines, reports local newspaper Metrópoli. The vast majority, 2,419, concerned drivers who rode without a helmet. But also, for example, driving on sidewalks has been punished.

At the same time, clear signs are emerging that users are starting to take the new rules to heart. The proportion of electric scooter riders wearing helmets has risen and is now up to seven out of ten.
