Arab and Muslim leaders gathered for a high-level meeting in Saudi Arabia agreed on a final communiqué on Monday, demanding that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories cease.
"A just and comprehensive peace in the region cannot be achieved without an end to Israel's occupation of all Arab territories (within the timeframe) from June 4, 1967", wrote the representatives of the gathered countries. The areas in question are the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and the Golan Heights.
The Arab and Muslim leaders thus demand Palestinian control over the disputed East Jerusalem.
The meeting condemned the Israeli army's actions "in a context related to genocide – particularly in northern Gaza in recent weeks".
The meeting also denounced Israel's harsh attacks "on the UN and its Secretary-General" and called for a ban on all arms exports to Israel.
At the meeting in Riyadh, representatives from both the Arab League with 22 member states and the Islamic Cooperation Organization (ICO) and its 57 member states gathered. In the joint statement, they referred to the proposal presented in 2002 for an Arab peace initiative. The cornerstone is that the Palestinians get their own state in exchange for normalized relations with Israel.
