According to initial reports, several American soldiers have been injured, according to a spokesperson for the US military. It is unclear how many and how seriously.

The injuries sustained in connection with the attack are still being investigated, according to the spokesperson.

The base houses American forces as well as personnel from the US-led coalition against the terrorist organization IS.

No group has taken responsibility for the attack.

US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been informed about the attack, according to the White House.

"They discussed the steps we take to defend our forces and respond to all attacks on our personnel," the White House said in a statement.

Iraq opposes "all reckless actions" that could escalate tensions in the region, says Iraq's security forces, reports AFP.

The attack on the airbase comes at the same time as tensions in the Middle East are increasing after Iran and its proxies vowed revenge following the killing of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniya and Hezbollah's commander Fuad Shukr last week.
