The American soldier Travis King, who last year fled from South Korea to North Korea, will plead guilty to desertion, according to his lawyer.

Travis King crossed the border illegally last summer during a guided tour in the demilitarized zone that divides South and North Korea.

After being arrested in North Korea and imprisoned for two months, he was transferred in September last year, with Swedish assistance, to China, where he was received by American personnel.

It is still unclear why King crossed the border, but from the North Korean side, they said he had been subjected to discrimination, among other things.

Desertion can result in imprisonment in the USA for up to five years.
