We are conducting a joint fundraising effort with Unicef, SOS Children's Villages and Save the Children, and we are contributing equally, says Kerstin Engström, chairperson of Akelius Foundation.

The funds are intended for education, but are not earmarked for specific purposes such as school buildings.

There is also a great humanitarian need, says Kerstin Engström.

The organization's founder, real estate mogul Roger Akelius, made headlines when he called the terrorist organization Hamas "freedom fighters" in an interview with the newspaper ETC last November.

It was a statement that sparked reactions. It is not a statement from Akelius Foundation. It is from Roger Akelius. We are completely politically and religiously independent. This is humanitarian support, says Kerstin Engström.
