There is an acute blood shortage in the Västra Götaland region. Now, healthcare risks having to cancel planned operations.
"Large parts of healthcare are affected if the blood stock is too low," says Linda Paulson, acting head of clinical immunology and transfusion medicine at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in a press release.
Blood can only be stored for six weeks, and the hospital needs a blood stock to be able to maintain preparedness for trauma and disaster situations. Blood is needed, among other things, in accidents, cancer treatments, and difficult births.
Larger blood-requiring operations have emptied the stock in certain blood groups in a short time.
Summer holidays and travel abroad lead to fewer blood donations during the summer. The region is now appealing to blood donors, especially those with Rh- blood, to donate blood.
