It was a very good trip and the weather was with us. Everything went according to plan, summarizes Stefan Holmblad Johansson, project manager at LKAB.
The spectacular church move was noticed all over the world, at today's move of the free-standing bell tower there was not the same commotion. But even this time the moving load was large and heavy: The tower measures 11 by 11 meters, is 32 meters high and weighs 62 tons. Just like the church, the tower rolled on trailers and along the same route.
But the bell tower could be moved at a higher speed – at most the team reached 2.7 kilometers per hour.
Now the bell tower stands to the right of the church, just like on the old site in Kiruna's old city center.
The move of Kiruna's center, including the church, is forced by the mining in LKAB's iron ore mine which affects the ground in the area. The church move costs over half a billion kronor, according to LKAB.
