Ludvig Åberg went the final round at seven strokes over par (79 strokes) for +3 overall and a final 42nd place. The top Swedish player instead became Vincent Norrman, who finished with a par round for two strokes over par total and a shared 40th place.
American Harris English won the PGA tour event in San Diego at a total of eight strokes under par. That's one stroke worse under par than Ludvig Åberg managed to go in the first round.
The world's sixth-ranked player started on Wednesday with a brilliant 63-round (-9) and was in the lead. On Thursday, it blew heavily at Torrey Pines and Åberg was not alone in having a tough time, but the build-up before the third round on Friday (three strokes over par) should not have been optimal for the Swede.
According to information to the Swedish commentators at the broadcasting TV company Max, Åberg was struck by stomach flu during the night to Friday, and it marked the beginning of the decline in the result list for the 25-year-old.
According to the magazine Golf Digest, 15 players withdrew from the competition – before or during the tournament – and several of the withdrawals are said to have been due to illness.
Åberg's next planned start is next week at Pebble Beach, California, which is one of eight so-called signature events where only the best players on the US tour are allowed to participate.
