rental flat
A flat you rent from a landlord, usually a municipal housing company or a private property owner. Rents are mostly negotiated between landlords and tenants' associations and are meant to reflect the flat's value in use, which keeps many of them below what a free market would charge.
A first-hand contract (förstahandskontrakt) gives you strong security: as a rule the landlord cannot end it without good reason, and the rent tribunal can try disputes. The catch is getting one; in cities they are mostly handed out through housing queues where waiting times can be long.
The other forms of home are a tenant-owned flat (bostadsrätt) and owning a house.
