amortering

amortisation

Paying down the loan itself, as opposed to the interest, usually every month as part of your mortgage payment. Swedish mortgages often run for a very long time, and national rules decide how much a borrower must at least pay down, depending on things such as how large the loan is compared with the value of the home and with your income.

These rules are set by the authorities and have changed over the years, so the bank tells you what applies to your loan when you apply. Paying down more than required is usually allowed.

When comparing homes, count both interest and amortisation, plus the monthly fee if it is a tenant-owned flat.
