avgift (månadsavgift)

In housing, the monthly fee that the owner of a tenant-owned flat (bostadsrätt) pays to the housing cooperative. It covers the association's costs for the building: loans, maintenance, heating, water, insurance and often part of the electricity or broadband, depending on the association.

The fee can rise when interest rates go up or when the building needs large repairs, so two similar flats with different fees can cost very different amounts to live in. Compare the fee and the association's debt per square metre when you look at flats for sale.

Outside housing, avgift simply means a fee or charge, such as a patient fee at the health centre.
