Delegations for the warring parties in Sudan are in Geneva for talks with a UN representative. One of the parties has not yet shown up at the meeting itself, announces UN spokesperson Alessandra Vellucci.
The fighting in Sudan broke out in April 2023 when the previously cooperating parties in the army and the paramilitary group RSF began fighting each other. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and many millions of others have been forced to flee during the war, which has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
The meeting is intended to primarily focus on humanitarian aid and protection for civilians, says Alessandra Vellucci.
The idea behind the meeting is for the two warring parties to talk to the same UN representative, but it is not scheduled for them to meet each other.
