–Six drownings in a single day is exceptional, says Kristiina Heinonen from Finland's swimming instruction and lifesaving association.
Poor swimming skills, lack of parental supervision and illness can be behind the drownings, according to Heinonen.
In total, nine people have drowned during the week in Finland. Additionally, many near-drownings have occurred during the intense heat wave over the past two weeks, when many have sought cooling in the water.
In Kalajoki in Northern Ostrobothnia, two teenage boys drowned on Friday at the long, shallow beach, and a third was still missing on Saturday. The boys had gone out about 100 meters from the shore when they called for help, according to witnesses.
–The beach is challenging even for those who can swim, says city manager Jukka Puoskari to Yle.
The city is now considering placing more signs that warn of currents and sudden depth differences in the seabed.
