The USA is strengthening its military presence in the Middle East to protect American personnel and to defend Israel against possible attacks, announces the Pentagon.
The deployment is a response to threats from Iran and its proxies, says the American defense headquarters' press secretary Sabrina Singh, who emphasizes that it involves defensive capabilities aimed at deterrence.
Defense Minister Lloyd Austin has, among other things, called in more fighter jets and cruisers with the ability to shoot down ballistic missiles to the region. Additional combat aircraft are also being deployed and measures are being taken to be able to distribute land-based air defense, according to the Pentagon.
"The USA is also continuing to focus intensively on reducing tensions in the region and is pushing for a ceasefire as part of a hostage deal to bring home hostages and end the war in Gaza", says Singh in a statement.
