”A fair and lasting peace that creates stability and security must respect international law, including the principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and that international borders cannot be changed by force”, it says in the press release.

The leaders welcome the US President Donald Trump's efforts to put an end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, but write that lasting peace cannot be achieved without Ukraine.

Trump has invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to the US state of Alaska on Friday, August 15. The US President will during the meeting urge Putin to end the war in Ukraine and says that they will discuss exchange of territory, something that Ukraine's president has repeatedly said no to.

Hungary is the only one of the EU's member countries that does not sign the press release.
