Hundreds have been evacuated from the Spanish city of Tres Cantos near Madrid, where strong winds have caused fires to spread at high speed over residential areas. A restaurant, a riding center, a boarding school and several other businesses have burned down, writes El País.
A man who was burned in the flames has died from his injuries.
On Tuesday morning, the wind had subsided and the fire department described the situation as more favorable to work in, according to Spanish media.
Forest fires are also raging in other parts of Spain and in Portugal.
In France, last week's heat wave continues, with dozens of warnings issued over large parts of the country's southern regions. In the municipality of Sauternes, Monday's temperature of 42.5 degrees meant a new August record, reports BFMTV.
Temperatures of around 40 degrees have also hit the Balkans. Dozens of homes have been evacuated in Albania, Montenegro and Croatia due to fires, writes AFP.
Italy is also sweltering. A four-year-old boy, who was left in a car on the island of Sardinia, died on Monday from heatstroke. The volcano Vesuvius in the southern parts of the mainland has been closed to tourists due to a forest fire.
