The mercury moved at the 40-line when a new heat wave takes hold of southern Europe. A man has died in what the Spanish newspaper El País describes as "hell fires" in the Madrid region. Two more men were killed in northwestern Spain and in Montenegro as they fought forest fires.

Hundreds have been evacuated from the Spanish city of Tres Cantos near Madrid, where strong winds have caused fires to spread at high speed over residential areas. A restaurant, a riding center, a boarding school and several other businesses have burned down, writes El País.

A man who was burned in the flames has died from his injuries.

Also in Castile and León in northwestern Spain, a man was killed during firefighting work.

Forest fires are also raging in other parts of Spain and in Portugal.

Want EU help

More than a hundred land and forest fires are also raging in Greece. The country has now turned to the EU and requested four aircraft that can water bomb the fires.

In France, last week's heat wave continues, with dozens of warnings issued over large parts of the country's southern regions. In the municipality of Sauternes, Monday's temperature of 42.5 degrees meant a new August record, reports BFMTV.

Soldier killed

Temperatures of around 40 degrees have also hit the Balkans. Dozens of homes have been evacuated in Albania, Montenegro and Croatia due to fires, writes AFP. In Montenegro, a soldier has been killed and another seriously injured when they, both men in their 40s, fought forest fires north of the capital Podgorica.

Italy is also sweltering. A four-year-old boy, who was left in a car on the island of Sardinia, died on Monday from heat stroke. The volcano Vesuvius in the southern parts of the mainland has been closed to tourists due to a forest fire.
