Biden's withdrawal sparks strong reactions in American media. Newspapers and TV channels describe the decision as "a lightning bolt", "a milestone" and "the most historic we've ever experienced."
Democracy is dead among the Democrats, says conservative Fox.
The New York Times White House correspondent says:
This is the most historic week we've ever experienced in our lifetime. We've never had a presidential candidate withdraw so late in a campaign.
Fox: Biden should resign
The Washington Post writes that the words "historic" and "unparalleled" have been used so often in American politics lately that they've lost their value – until Sunday, when President Biden's decision sent a shockwave through the country.
"This milestone will be etched into the annals of politics: a sitting president forced by his own party to give up his candidacy," writes political correspondent Dan Balz in the newspaper.
Conservative Fox believes that Biden should resign as president.
If Joe Biden is not capable of running a presidential campaign, he is, with all certainty, not capable of performing his duties as president, says conservative program leader Sean Hannity on Fox News.
Best for the country
CNN writes in its analysis that Biden never managed to convince voters that, at 81 years old, he still has what it takes to be re-elected as the President of the USA.
"Kamala Harris, or whoever it will be, now faces one of history's most colossal tasks against an opponent (Donald Trump) who has already proven that there's nothing he won't do to win," writes CNN.
The Boston Globe believes that Biden made a decision that was best for the country.
"Joe Biden is, above all, a man who loves his country. For that reason, there was never any doubt that he would do the right thing, no matter how much it hurt him," writes the newspaper.
