Australia is donating 49 tanks of an older model to Ukraine, according to the country's defense department.
The American-made tanks of the M1A1 type, equipped with heavy firepower, were intended to be taken out of service from next year.
"We stand side by side with Ukraine in their fight against Russia's illegal invasion", says Australia's defense industry minister Pat Conroy in a statement.
