The majority of the dead are women and children. The actual death toll is however likely to be significantly higher, since only persons who have been taken to hospital have been registered. According to the official, many families have buried their dead without seeking medical help due to the security situation and the lack of transport.

Recently, the paramilitary rebel group RSF has stepped up its attacks on the strategically important al-Fashir. The city has been besieged by RSF for over a year, but the group has not managed to capture it – al-Fashir is still held by the Sudanese army.

The war in Sudan has been going on since 2023 when the conflict between the country's army and RSF broke out and spread across the country.

Over 20,000 people have been killed and over 14 million have been displaced from their homes. The situation in Sudan is described as the worst humanitarian disaster in the world.
